The first vineyards
The Palisades Canyon vineyard was part Rancho Carne Humana granted to of Edward Bale by the Mexican Governor of Alta California when California was part of Mexico. Bale died in 1849 and Bale’s wife and family sold off this section of his ranch after his death.
It quickly passed through many hands, winding up in 1871 as the property of James Horn and his wife Jeannie, immigrants from Scotland. The Horns planted the first four acres of vines on the property sometime before 1878 and expanded their plantings to six acres in 1881. They also grew and sold fruit and kept dairy cows. In 1882 they constructed a farmhouse that is now the home of Felicia and Steve.
